Designing depth: real-time market liquidity reimagined for every screen

Designing the future of liquidity visualization from the ground up for a new generation of crypto traders

Client introduction

Bookmap is a professional-grade trading platform known for its powerful visualization of market liquidity using real-time heatmaps. Traditionally focused on desktop users, Bookmap serves a growing base of institutional and advanced retail traders who rely on granular order flow data to inform split-second decisions.

Project challenge

With the rise of 24/7 crypto markets and the growing demand for mobility, Bookmap identified a critical opportunity: expand its product offering beyond desktop by launching entirely new web and mobile applications, built from scratch. It was a ground-up design to bring the signature Bookmap heatmap, proprietary indicators, and trading workflows to modern, lightweight, and touch-friendly environments.

Key challenges included:

  • Designing a modular trading system that maintains performance and clarity.
  • Translating complex real-time visualizations to smaller screens without losing fidelity.
  • Building customization and speed into every layer—from chart interaction to order execution.

Solution
overview

Empha Studio partnered with Bookmap as the end-to-end UX/UI design team for the new web and mobile platforms. From user research to interaction design, we crafted a seamless, high-performance trading experience tailored to the unique needs of crypto traders. Our work spanned product strategy, system architecture, UX flows, visual design, and close collaboration with engineering.

The result: a dual-platform trading system that mirrors Bookmap’s powerful desktop offering—adapted, optimized, and reimagined for real-time decision-making on the move.

01

Emphasize

We conducted deep-dive interviews with professional crypto traders, both active Bookmap users and newcomers. We mapped their routines, frustrations, and unmet needs across devices. Core insights included:

  • Traders want to stay connected outside the desktop, but current mobile tools lack the depth and trust they require.
  • Speed and visual clarity are non-negotiable—even on smaller screens.
  • Users demanded high control and flexibility over their trading interface.

02

Define

From our research, we defined the product vision as:

“Deliver the precision and power of Bookmap’s heatmap and trading engine to a web and mobile platform—without compromising performance, control, or clarity.”

We mapped key personas—from day traders to crypto scalpers—and translated their pain points into product principles around visibility, modularity, and responsiveness.

Ideate

We explored multiple system architectures, interaction models, and component libraries through:

  • Sketching and whiteboarding workshops.
  • Interface explorations of modular trading dashboards.
  • Workflow modeling of high-speed order placement and chart interactions

We co-created with the client to prioritize features that balanced market readiness with innovation.

04

Prototype

We built mid- and high-fidelity prototypes for:

  • Heatmap rendering with zoom, scroll, and pan gestures.
  • A smart trading panel with speed dial, pre-fill options, and collapsible modules.
  • A mobile layout system that adapts to vertical/horizontal use, and hides non-essential UI during active trading.

Test

We tested early flows and prototypes with professional users in sandbox environments. Iterative feedback cycles helped us fine-tune:

  • Chart scaling behavior on mobile.
  • Onboarding flows for crypto-first traders.
  • Customization settings and saved layouts.

Key learnings

Designing from scratch = questioning everything

From chart logic to user defaults. Our early alignment with engineering was essential to ensure feasibility at scale

Customization is a competitive edge

Traders are more loyal when they can mold the interface to their workflow

Mobile doesn’t mean “lite”

It means smarter defaults, focused UX, and gesture-first thinking

Conclusion

With Empha Studio’s end-to-end product design leadership, Bookmap successfully evolved from a single-platform desktop solution to a multi-device trading ecosystem. We bridged complexity and simplicity to deliver a platform traders can trust—whether they’re on their desktop workstation or their mobile phone.

Have a project in mind?

We’d love to bring your ideas to life.

Tell us what you’re thinking — and we’ll help shape it.

Wondering something?
Let’s clear it up

What is AI automation, exactly — and what can you build?
Arrow forward icon

AI automation means using large language models (like GPT-4) to handle repeatable tasks inside your business. We design and build custom agents that can qualify leads, summarize content, route tickets, trigger workflows, or power internal copilots.

Do you only work on AI and automation projects?
Arrow forward icon

Not at all. While we specialize in building intelligent systems, we also offer full-service UX/UI and product design — from discovery to delivery. Many of our clients come to us purely for design support, with or without AI.

What kind of companies do you usually work with?
Arrow forward icon

We collaborate with startups, scale-ups, and enterprise teams across fintech, SaaS, healthcare, e-commerce, logistics, and more. Whether you’re building your first product or scaling a complex system, we adapt to your stage and stack.

Can you help us design or improve our existing product interface?
Arrow forward icon

Absolutely. We run UX audits, onboarding redesigns, and complete product design engagements. Whether you're looking to clean up a dashboard, increase activation, or launch a new feature — we’ve got the design depth to support it.

Can you integrate AI agents into our current tools or workflows?
Arrow forward icon

Yes — that’s the core of what we do. We build agents that connect directly to your tools (Slack, Notion, HubSpot, CRMs, internal platforms), automate actions across them, and fit how your team already works. No need to change your stack.

Do we need technical staff to manage these AI agents?
Arrow forward icon

No — we design every system to be maintainable without in-house ML engineers. We handle the technical setup, logic, and integrations, and offer optional support plans to monitor and optimize performance post-launch.

What if we want to start with just design — or just automation?
Arrow forward icon

That’s totally fine. You can engage us for standalone UX/UI work, product discovery, or AI automation — or combine them. We’re built to plug into your priorities and scale with your roadmap.
